Towards text copyright detection using metadata in web applications

Purpose – This paper aims to present the semantic content identifier (SCI), a permanent identifier, computed through a linear-time onion-peeling algorithm that enables the extraction of semantic features from a text, and the integration of this information within the permanent identifier. Design/methodology/approach – The authors employ SCI to propose a mechanism for simultaneously checking the authenticity and degrees of similarity between different information objects, and present an empirical investigation of the method. A management scenario for the control of the authentication process and the detection of the degree of violation of documents is proposed. Findings – Such a mechanism could be adopted as a component of libraries' strategy for the protection of the copyrights for documents published on the web. Practical implications – The use of the proposed numeric code can be utilised efficiently as a constituent part of the digital object identifier (DOI) system, making its computation more efficient and meaningful. Originality/value – The identifier proposed in the paper can result in a more efficient index for identifying and retrieving objects in a digital library, as well as online repositories and commercial applications that can handle information retrieval requests more effectively.

If We don’t Know What Citations Mean, What Does it Mean when We Count Them?

In my last post for the Kitchen I explored what citations might mean within any given publication.   Do citations necessarily indicate the significance of the cited publication in question? And if we don’t really know what individual citations mean, why do we think we can draw important meaning from their aggregation?
Citation metrics are insidious. That’s the implication of plenty of conversation in the media and the sciences, the impetus for the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), and the strong suggestion of a recent report from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).   Regular readers of the Kitchen will be familiar with debates about such metrics as theJournal Impact Factor (JIF), the h-index, and altmetrics, and concerns about the screwy incentivesthat such metrics produce. Regular readers might also wonder how much more can be said about the technical details of such metrics and the ethics of their utility.

Comparative efficacy and safety of anticoagulants and aspirin for extended treatment of venous thromboembolism: A network meta-analysis

Objective To systematically review the literature and to quantitatively evaluate the efficacy and safety of extended pharmacologic treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE) through network meta-analysis (NMA). Methods A systematic literature search (MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, through September 2014) and searching of reference lists of included studies and relevant reviews was conducted to identify randomized controlled trials of patients who completed initial anticoagulant treatment for VTE and then randomized for the extension study; compared extension of anticoagulant treatment to placebo or active control; and reported at least one outcome of interest (VTE or a composite of major bleeding or clinically relevant non-major bleeding). A random-effects Frequentist approach to NMA was used to calculate relative risks with 95% confidence intervals. Results Ten trials (n=11,079) were included. Risk of bias (assessed with the Cochrane tool) was low in most domains assessed across the included trials. Apixaban (2.5mg and 5mg), dabigatran, rivaroxaban, idraparinux and vitamin K antagonists (VKA) each significantly reduced the risk of VTE recurrence compared to placebo, ranging from a 73% reduction with idraparinux to 86% with VKAs. With exception of idraparinux, all active therapies significantly reduced VTE recurrence risk versus aspirin, ranging from a 73% reduction with either apixaban 2.5mg or rivaroxaban to 80% with VKAs. Apixaban and aspirin were the only therapies that did not increase composite bleeding risk significantly compared to placebo. All active therapies except aspirin increased risk of composite bleeding by 2 to 4-fold compared to apixaban 2.5mg, with no difference found between the two apixaban doses. Conclusion Extended treatment of VTE is a reasonable approach to provide continued protection from VTE recurrence although bleeding risk is variable across therapeutic options. Our results indicate that apixaban, dabigatran, rivaroxaban, idraparinux and VKAs all reduced VTE recurrence when compared to placebo. Apixaban appears to have a more favorable safety profile compared to other therapies.
